This highly practical and intensive 2 day course (exam on day 2), will enable healthcare and sports professionals who have attended a basic 1 day Sports First Aid course, to improve upon their basic skills knowledge under the guidance of Dr Mark Gillett (A&E Consultant & Sports Physician) and Tony Bennison.

Recognition being sought from the ACPSM towards their GOLD & SILVER CPD pathway

Aims and Objectives

– advanced, risk-specific course (sport and exercise), aimed at giving touchline practitioners extended skills and knowledge

 

Basic Life Support review

To be run as a group practical sports-trauma scenario. 

Lectures/skill stations:   
The Primary Survey in Sport and Exercise – adaptation of the   standard Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) approach,    including MOI, Cx-spine, jaw thrust, etc.
Advanced ABC – Oropharyngeal & Nasopharyngeal airways, LMA/Combitube, suction, O2 (Lifeline Pro), BVM, NRM, Endotracheal Intubation discussion including RSI
AED – Automated External Defibrilation

Head injury – pathology + latest perspectives: Vienna, SAC, Cog Test – pitchside neurological assessment, follow up Head Injury forms, etc

 

Neck – pathology, assessment (NEXUS, etc), immediate management, packaging including collars, log roll, boards versus vacuum mat

 

Limb trauma – bleeds, fractures, dislocation, soft-tissue: assessment, management including reduction, vacuum splint/fracture immobilisation/SAM® splint (bleeds to include wound closure – suture/glue/sepsis issues)

 

Medical problems – asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergency, etc

 

Scenarios/case studies:

Problem solving and decision making: small groups/pairs/individual – scenario - feedback to group.

 

Final assessment:

 

1.      Basic Life Support with adjuncts (Nasopharyngeal + O2) + AED

2.      Trauma scenario management to including spinal immobilisation, collar application, O2 and NRM

3.      Multiple Choice Questions - 25 questions

 

Course ends: Final wash up
