Introduction- CLBP ‘the dilemma’s’
This session gives a critical and state of the art overview of the literature regarding the ‘diagnosis and management dilemma’s’ for CLBP. A critical review of the role of imaging will be included. Several suggested classification systems for LBP will be discussed.
A clinical and novel mechanism-based classification framework will be presented.
Motor Control Impairment as the underlying mechanism behind CLBP?
During this session the possibility of Motor Control Impairment as the underlying mechanism behind CLBP is discussed.
Indentification based on Subjective and physical Neuromuscular Examination
During this theoretical and practical session participants develop clinical skills to assess and identify pain disorders of the lumbo-pelvic region, where motor control has been compromised. This is based on: subjective information, observation of static and dynamic posture, functional tests and movement analysis, specific postural and movement control tests and specific muscle tests, as part of an overall comprehensive examination. This will assist the clinician through the clinical reasoning process to consider if the motor control system is compromised and can be regarded as the underlying basis for the CLBP disorder.
Sub-classification: Five directional-based patterns of Motor Control Impairment (MCI)
This clinically orientated session aims to further develop the clinicians’ skills to identify and sub-classify patients with MCI into five common patterns (flexion pattern, active extension pattern, passive extension pattern, lateral shifting pattern and multidirectional pattern of MCI). The characteristics of these specific patterns of MCI and their clinical presentation will be highlighted during this session using videotaped case studies. |
Management of CLBP subjects with sub-classification of motor control impairment
During this theoretical and practical session clinicians will learn to develop clinical skills to manage CLBP patients with a sub-classification of motor control impairment based on a functional motor learning intervention and cognitive behavioural principles. Participants will learn to develop a mechanism-based progressive management programme. This includes emphasis on contributing factors.
Case studies / Discussion
During this clinically orientated session all the presented material will be integrated into practice using case presentations, followed by group discussion and clinical reasoning.
Show me the evidence!
During this closing 'evidence’ session completed and ongoing research by the presenter will be highlighted. The findings from clinical laboratory studies support the validity of the classification system. They lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms behind the CLBP disorder. Integrating this evidence-based framework of classification into practice should lead to better outcome. |
