Plyometric training, also termed ‘jump training’, is a mode of exercise involving jumping, hopping, leaping, and bounding drills, which was first implemented in strength and conditioning programmes by athletics coaches from the Soviet Union in the 1960’s, and aroused international curiosity following the 1972 Olympics when Eastern European countries dominated the gold medals in track and field, gymnastics, and weight-lifting.

More recently, rigorous scientific research has demonstrated that plyometric training is currently the most effective of all interventions for knee injury prevention and late-stage rehabilitation in sport and high-level occupational activities. This theory and predominantly practical course, which is unique in the United Kingdom, presents the basic science and applied techniques of Clinical Plyometrics with regard to enhancing biomechanics and neuromuscular control of the knee. Emphasis is placed on providing delegates with the practical assessment and teaching skills to immediately employ evidence-based plyometric training in their clinical practise. Extensive reference is made to the most up-to-date published and unpublished research from the international scientific community. Past course delegates have included clinicians from the National Health Service, private practice, Premier League Rugby Union, Premier League Football, and the British Armed Forces. The course Content and Learning Outcomes correspond to multiple European Standards within the Core Competencies for a Sports Physiotherapist as defined by the Sports Physiotherapy for All Project, and the course is a British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) Approved Continuing Professional Development Course.
